Discover why HCA’s tales have such universal appeal for both children and adults

This course will introduce you to some of Hans Christian Andersen’s most popular fairy tales, as well as a few less well-known ones. It will help you analyse the themes in these fairy tales, and give you an opportunity to discuss how these works were viewed in the author’s own times as well as their cross-cultural importance today, as the inspiration for many popular books and movies. Each week, experts from the internationally renowned HC Andersen Center will guide discussions, analyses and interpretations of one or more of the author’s fairy tales.

You will need a basic ability to read and understand Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales in English. Otherwise, a curiosity about and a love for the fairy tale genre is the sole prerequisite for the course.

New English translations of the fairy tales will be used. You can download them from this website.

What is a Certificate of Achievement?

How do I qualify for a Certificate of Achievement?

To be eligible to buy a Certificate of Achievement, you must:

complete 90% of the steps in a course (by using the “Mark as complete” button on each step),
attempt every test question in the course,
score over 70% on average across all course tests.

How do I buy a Certificate of Achievement?

If you’re taking a course, we’ll email you details of how to buy a Certificate of Achievement, once you’re eligible for one.

How much does a Certificate of Achievement cost?

The cost of the Certificate of Achievement varies depending on the course. They normally cost from £39.00 (GBP) to £59.00 (GBP) + shipping. The price shown includes a digital and printed certificate and transcript, and VAT or local sales tax. The exact price for your course will be shown within the course itself.

What if I don’t qualify to buy a Certificate of Achievement?

If you don’t qualify to buy a Certificate of Achievement because your test score does not meet the 70% pass threshold, you have a couple of options. You will still be able to purchase a Statement of Participation for the course, or you could join a later run of the course. Unfortunately it is not possible to retake tests in FutureLearn courses.

What is a Statement of Participation?

A Statement of Participation is a collectable printed and digital record that you can buy, to show that you’ve taken part in a FutureLearn course. Statements are available for the vast majority of FutureLearn courses in both digital and printed formats. You can view our page about Statements of Participation to see what they look like.

Your Statement will include your name; a short summary of the course and how long it took; the logo of the university and other organisations associated with your course. In addition, your printed certificate will also include the lead educator’s signature.

Your Statement will confirm that you’ve completed the majority of steps in a course and attempted all test questions, but it will not show your individual level of completion or your test scores.

Hans Christian Andersen Centre

The Hans Christian Andersen Centre at the University of Southern Denmark in Odense, Denmark is the world’s leading institution within the field of Hans Christian Andersen research. This research follows three tracks: Hans Christian Andersen’s life, his works and his cultural importance. The centre collaborates closely with the municipality of Odense, Odense City Museums and the Hans Christian Andersen Foundation.

Because of the close connection and collaboration with Odense City Museums (including the Hans Christian Andersen Museum and Hans Christian Andersen’s Childhood Home), the Hans Christian Andersen Centre has unique access to the following original objects:

Original hand-written manuscripts and drafts
Letters to, from and on Hans Christian Andersen
Drawings, paper cuts, screens, collages and picture books
Inscriptions
Portraits of Hans Christian Andersen (paintings and photographs)
Translations of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales. The collection counts 139 language versions
All items from Hans Christian Andersen’s last home in Nyhavn, Copenhagen: original furniture, pictures, books, bric-a-brac etc.

The mission of the centre is to

carry out cultural and literary research within the field of Hans Christian Andersen on an international level
communicate obtained knowledge about Hans Christian Andersen on relevant platforms
develop new approaches within cultural research to cast light on the cultural significance of Hans Christian Andersen
communicate knowledge about the universe of Hans Christian Andersen in collaboration with Odense City Museums
interact with relevant partners locally, nationally and internationally.

The Hans Christian Andersen Centre was established in 1988, and was re-structured and re-launched in 2012 with the purpose of renewing the literary and cultural approaches to Hans Christian Andersen. The centre is located in the centre of Odense in the former Odense Secular Convent for Noble Women that dates back to 1504.
