Cambridge English Language Assessment is a part of Cambridge Assessment, a not-for-profit department of the University of Cambridge. Our role is to develop and deliver English language testing, teacher development and curriculum reform worldwide, as part of the University’s educational mission. We have around 650 staff working in offices in more than 20 countries worldwide and a global network of 2,800 authorised centres who deliver our exams.

All of our activity is driven by a programme of academic and professional research conducted by a dedicated team of specialist researchers. We also work closely with leading academics and professional organisations to ensure that our products and services meet the needs of educators, employers and governments and that they help learners to develop the language skills they need for success in the real world.

The Cambridge English exams cover every level from young learners to near-native proficiency, with tailored qualifications for a wide range of academic and professional requirements as well as qualifications specifically designed for use within compulsory education. The exams are taken by more than five million people every year in over 130 countries. They are recognised by over 20,000 government departments, universities, employers and other organisations worldwide.

We provide professional development for tens of thousands of teachers through online and face-to-face seminars and workshops, professional qualifications and the Cambridge English Teacher professional membership. Our teacher development activity is backed by the Cambridge English Teacher Framework.

In collaboration with Cambridge University Press, we publish a very wide range of learning resources in print and digital formats which provide teachers and learners with comprehensive support for every aspect of language learning. We also publish an extensive series of academic volumes (currently more than 40 titles in print) and a quarterly journal covering issues in language teaching, learning and assessment.

We work with governments worldwide to benchmark language skills, identify opportunities for curriculum improvement and implement educational reform. This work includes carrying out language assessment for entire populations of school students, profiling of teacher competences, developing university curricula and many other projects designed specifically to meet national requirements. We also carry out large-scale research for the European Commission, designed to support international policy initiatives.

Cambridge English exams are widely used by immigration authorities in English speaking countries. In particular, IELTS (the International English Language Testing System, jointly owned by British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge English), is the main test used to assess the language skills of people seeking visas to study or work in Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom and is also widely used for this purpose in New Zealand, the United States and other countries.
