Course Description

This course is made available through the eLearnAfrica and FutureLearn partnership.

Learn Catalan by spending a day with Ella as she explores Barcelona

Catalan is the language of international tourist destinations such as Barcelona and Valencia – hotspots of history and culture.

On this course, you will explore the basics of the Catalan language alongside Ella – an American tourist in Barcelona – as she learns basic vocabulary and grammar in the context of everyday local life. Learning via glossaries, exercises, and videos, you’ll get to grips with the essentials of communication in this most fascinating part of Europe.

You’ll discover Catalan phrases and pronunciation, as well as the culture of the region – even listening to a full playlist of Catalan songs in the process.

This course is designed for anyone interested in learning basic Catalan who has no prior knowledge of the language, but wants to learn beginner-level Catalan (A1) to integrate effectively and rapidly while visiting Barcelona and Catalonia in general. Learners will need to be fluent in English as this is the working language of the MOOC.

Certificate cost may vary. You will be redirected to the host page for cost and payment options.

Pompeu Fabra University Barcelona

Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) is a modern public university, conveniently located in the centre of Barcelona (Spain) and founded in 1990 with the aim of providing top quality education and standing out as a research-based university.

Today, UPF is both a specialised university with a unique teaching model and a cutting-edge research institution in three closely related fields of knowledge: − Social sciences and humanities, on the Ciutadella campus − Health and life sciences, on the Mar campus − Communication and information technologies, on the Poblenou campus

UPF places a strong emphasis on quality teaching, based on comprehensive education and student-centred learning, and innovation in the learning processes. UPF’s MOOCs are produced within this general goal.

In recent years, the university has deepened its international collaboration with highly valued, strategic partners on all continents, yielding new opportunities for mobility and enabling the launch of joint programmes. The university has also experienced substantial growth in research thanks to its policy, from the start, of seeking out top international talent, which has allowed it to recruit some of the best researchers and lecturers.

These policies have helped to make UPF a multilingual university with three working languages (Catalan, Spanish and English) for both teaching and research. All PhD programmes and a wide range of master’s programmes can be fully or partially taken in English, as can an ever-increasing percentage of undergraduate-level coursework.
