Trace the history and look to the future of traditional Chinese medicine

Despite having their origins in the medicine of ancient China, traditional Chinese herbal remedies remain in high demand today. This has generated a need to develop and commercialise traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

On this five-week course from Taipei Medical University, you’ll examine the clinical development of traditional Chinese herbal medicine. From the natural resources and theories underpinning TCM to the use of its remedies in modern scientific research, you’ll trace the history and look to the future of Chinese herbal medicine.

Learn how herbal remedies are identified and cultivated

What herbs go into Chinese herbal remedies? You’ll start the course with an introduction to the most essential ingredients of TCM, and how they are identified.

You’ll home in on the properties of common herbs and roots, learning how their cultivation and use have evolved over millennia.

Master the processes involved in drug development

After an overview of some of the principal resources of Chinese medicine, you’ll begin exploring how these are processed, developed, and checked for standards and quality.

Examining a wide range of popular TCM products, including Gen Yen Ointment and herbal acne solutions, you’ll learn how age-old remedies have been commercialised as modern treatments.

Understand the role of TCM in modern medicine

The final week of the course will consider the fundamental theories of Chinese herbal medicine in the light of modern medical treatments.

You’ll learn how TCM has contributed to modern scientific research and biotechnology.
