Course Description

This course is made available through the eLearnAfrica and FutureLearn partnership.

Understand and analyse transport phenomena

Transport phenomena like heat transfer, mass transfer, and momentum transfer are vital to the study of chemical engineering. Understanding them is the key to developing advanced separation techniques.

This six-week course from Taipei Medical University (TMU) provides a comprehensive overview of transport phenomena, with a particular focus on diffusion, mass transfer, and convection. Once you’ve understood the fundamentals of all three processes, you’ll learn how to analyse them using coefficient models.

Gain an introduction to diffusion, convection, and mass transfer

You’ll start the course with an overview of the basic concepts and mechanisms of three transport phenomena: diffusion, convection, and mass transfer.

You’ll explore different types of diffusion and mass transfer, learning how you can identify them in everyday life.

Solve equations using the mass transfer and diffusion coefficient models

Once you’ve understood the principles of diffusion, convection, and mass transfer, you’ll begin mastering equations for analysing them. You’ll focus on two basic models for analysis, known as the diffusion coefficient model and the mass transfer coefficient model.

By the end of the course, you’ll have a deeper understanding of essential transport phenomena, and the skills you need to undertake advanced separation techniques.

This course is designed for anyone interested in learning more about a vital area of chemistry and chemical engineering.

Learners will need a basic understanding of mathematics or engineering, and the ability to solve linear algebra and differential equations.

Certificate cost may vary. You will be redirected to the host page for cost and payment options.

Taipei Medical University

Taipei Medical University (TMU), 600 meters away from the world’s tallest green building - Taipei 101 building, has been a leader in Taiwan’s healthcare system for more than half a century due to its research, teaching excellence, internationalization and outstanding medical service. TMU has seven colleges including College of Medicine, College of Oral Medicine, College of Pharmacy, College of Public Health and Nutrition, College of Nursing, College of Medical Science and Technology and College of Humanities and Social Sciences and owns three Joint Commission International (JCI)-accredited hospitals with a total capacity of over 3,100 beds. TMU and its three JCI hospitals are the largest and one of the best healthcare systems in the Taipei Metropolitan Area.

TMU leads in quite a few research areas including Cancer, Translational Medicine, Neuroregenerative Medicine, Biomedical Devices and Tissue Engineering, Reproductive Medicine and Biomedical Informatics. TMU has several top-notch research centers such as Center of Excellence for Cancer Research, Center of Excellence for Clinical Trial and Research in Neuroscience, Center of Excellence for Stroke Research, Center of Excellence for Biomedical Implants and Microsurgery Devices. TMU collaborates with many international prestigious universities and institutes on cancer, neurotrauma, nanotechnology and 3D printing research such as National Institutes of Health, Johns Hopkins University, University of Southampton, University of Dundee, University of Liverpool, Aarhus University, University of Washington, University of Tokyo, Academia Sinica, and National Health Research Institutes.

TMU’s commitment to internationalisation has resulted in 36,000 alumni improving healthcare systems in over100 countries around the world. More than 5,500 students from over 31 countries are enrolled in TMU’s seven colleges, and most master’s degree and doctoral programs offer instruction in English. The permanent appointment of the university’s medical teams to assist two African nations (Swaziland and Sao Tome and Principe) provides opportunities for service and learning as well as enhancing Taiwan’s health diplomacy.
