Course Description

This course is made available through the eLearnAfrica and FutureLearn partnership.

Improve your English language teaching (ELT) skills in the area of pronunciation

Many people think that pronunciation is just about sounding the same as native speakers. However, there’s so much more to this fascinating area of linguistics, as you’ll find out on this four week course from Language Fuel.

You’ll develop your English language tuition skills using fun teaching techniques and best practice to engage adult learners.

Discover the key pronunciation areas that impact intelligibility

You’ll explore the core features of English pronunciation, splitting your learning into connected speech (suprasegmental features) and sounds (segmental features).

With this knowledge, you’ll be able to adapt your teaching structure, ensuring you’re putting your energy into the most effective areas of your course outline.

Identify the pronunciation learning needs of individual students

Not every learner will struggle with the same areas of pronunciation.

On this course, you’ll break down common pronunciation issues, including natural linking, intonation, and speed.

Using videos, interactive exercises, and printable resources, you’ll be able to enhance individual learning experiences and help your students gain confidence in their English speaking.

Share best practice methods with other English language teachers

Guided by Joanna Smith, an expert in Linguistics with over ten years’ experience in training teachers, you’ll explore innovative yet practical techniques to develop learners’ pronunciation.

You’ll also have the opportunity to share your own best practice methods, developing a collaborative approach to language teaching with other educators around the world.

By the end of this course, you’ll have developed your linguistic knowledge of pronunciation and gained a range of useful tools and techniques to enhance your students’ English speaking skills.

This course is designed for English language teachers who want to improve their practice of teaching English pronunciation to non-native speakers.
