The Institute of Humanities at Northumbria University was established in 2015 to further develop and advance world-leading research that can highlight the relevance of the Humanities in contemporary society.

Recent research projects and fields of study led by Humanities staff address global migration, American studies, medicine as a human practice, memory and identity, transnationalism, social activism, and include the practice of digital humanities.

The Institute of Humanities brings together researchers from disciplinary studies in History, Literature, Linguistics, Creative Writing, Arts, Media, and Heritage Studies, but also aims to foster the development of collaborative interdisciplinary research.

Researchers affiliated with the Institute include senior Humanities professors, emerging early career academics, and postgraduates. They are leading research projects that have attracted more than £3 million in competitive funding over the last five years, and have generated publications classed as world-leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour according to the Higher Education Funding Council for England.
