Course Description

This course is made available through the eLearnAfrica and FutureLearn partnership.

Learn how and why tourists engage with cultural heritage and develop your understanding of what drives heritage tourism.

Find out about the impact of cultural and heritage tourism, including the negative effects of tourism on culture, and what this means for the conservation and management of World Heritage Sites in the future.

During this course you’ll use relevant tourism case study examples from Asia and around the world to critically examine a range of contemporary issues in cultural and heritage site tourism management.

Improve your understanding of the positive and negative effects of tourism on culture

First you’ll get clear on the definitions and concepts involved so that you understand the difference between cultural tourism and heritage tourism.

Then you’ll build interdisciplinary knowledge on concepts that affect them, such as power, globalisation, authenticity, commodification, and representation.

By introducing you to current debates within heritage tourism studies, this course helps you explore how to overcome these challenges with a sustainable approach to tourism management and destination development.

Develop the professional skills needed for managing heritage and cultural tourism resources

On this course, you’ll cover all aspects of managing World Heritage Sites, including promotion, conservation and safeguarding.

Discover more about the legal frameworks, processes, and practices used to identify and manage these sites and learn about the unique role of emotion in heritage tourism.

By the end of this course you’ll have a solid understanding of the challenges and opportunities of managing heritage and cultural tourism resources. You’ll also know how to best promote and conserve World Heritage Sites in line with sustainable tourism principles.

This course is designed for anyone interested in cross-cultural tourism research and the protection of world cultural heritage.
