How do you teach students who can’t understand your language? Learn the skills to become an effective and engaging EFL teacher.
This course is made available through the eLearnAfrica and FutureLearn partnership.
Working as a language teacher has complex demands compared to other teaching situations. You’ll face language obstacles that can affect learner engagement, retention, and classroom dynamics.
On this four-week course, you’ll address the differences between a language teacher and other forms of teaching and the challenges this presents. You’ll then explore the solutions that can be found by examining what you say in the classroom, and how you say it.
Learning from the experts at Language International New Zealand, you’ll explore the multiple roles involved in being a language teacher, and the techniques you can use to become a more effective teacher.
You’ll examine different methods to control and focus the language you use in the classroom and learn how this has a direct effect on the tasks you’re able to complete in a lesson.
You’ll develop your skills in delivering clear and concise instructions as well as techniques such as asking the right questions to check that your students understand your directions.
You’ll learn how to apply these teaching methods to a context you’re familiar with, to ensure you know how to put your new skills into practice.
By the end of this course, you’ll have the confidence and knowledge to deliver effective teacher talk that helps your students learn English in engaging lessons.
This course is designed for trainee and early career language teachers, or those interested in training as a language teacher.
It is most useful for teaching English in English, but may also benefit teachers of other languages.
